About the Emergency Medicine Interest Group
The Emergency Medicine Interest Group is a student run, faculty-mentored organization that seeks to introduce GW medical students to Emergency Medicine as a specialty and a career choice. We hold regular lunch meetings aimed primarily at first and second year students on a variety of topics such as the history of Emergency Medicine career, lifestyle choices of EM physicians, and issues of importance to Emergency Medicine such as litigation and overcrowding. Third year medical students also benefit from information sessions focused on planning their fourth year, choosing the time and location of their EM rotation, and choosing an EM residency.
EMIG offers and administers a shadowing program to increase the exposure of first and second year students to clinical Emergency Medicine by pairing them with a senior emergency medicine resident for 4 hours, usually on a Friday night, at GW Hospital, PG Hospital Center, or Children's National Medical Center.
Additionally, EMIG hosts Clinical Skills Nights, where EM faculty and residents teach students common emergency skills, such as suturing, intubation, lumbar puncture, etc. Click on a link to see photos from the Fall 2006 event, Spring 2007 event or Disaster Response 2007 event.
During 2007-2008 academic year, EMIG is also pleased to offer the following:
